Hi there.

My axolotl, Mixcoatl, has a fairly large tank all to himself with lots of places to hide and relax. His tank is very bad with algae growth however. Being unable to put plecs into the tank due to Mixcoatl wanting to eat them all, I have resorted to plants to counter act the algae growth.

A floating plant that has done wonders for this battle against algae in his tank is Salvinia. Due to it being a floating plant that spreads out a lot! It blocks quite a lot of light getting into his tank and along with absorbing the nitrates and nitrites at the same time it truly is making life difficult for the algae.

issue i have though is that this plant does need some form of fertiliser/food to keep it vibrant and well to make sure it continues to fight the algae. I can’t seem to find any where any info as to whether I can put certain plant fertiliser/food into his tank to help the plants as well as not harming Mixcoatl in the process. Can anyone help?

Well, if Salvinia is efficient against algae, that's good news. It also absorbs directly ammonium.
If your Salvinia seems to stop growing, you can throw out a part of it.
Else everything is all right.
I wouldn't add fertilizers anyway. Axolotl poo should be enough

I would agree with the above statement that axolotl poop should be enough. To address the algae problem more directly, however, is there any way that the light that hits the tank can be reduced by moving the tank and/or using a curtain-like device? Axolotls really don't like a lot of light, and if there's enough light for an algae problem, there's probably too much for your axolotl.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
