Hi
Just over a month ago my female axolotl laid eggs. These have successfully hatched and now I have almost one month old larvae, however since I removed the eggs the adults have been separated. They were sharing the same tank but with a divider (that worked just fine when she was still growing and not big enough to be mixed with my male). However, today I've come home and she's laying eggs again despite being separate from the male for one month and the real confusing bit is that there are eggs on his side too!

Now either she is one clever little axolotl and has travelled over the top of the divider and laid eggs on his side and then gone back onto her side to lay some more or something strange has happened. It's the only thing I can think of but I dont understand why! Plus I'm now really worried. Does anyone know where I could get a really sturdy divider, because to be fair the one that I have at the moment is a bit floppy?

Going to lower the water level and remove the eggs tommorrow when hopefully she'll have finished laying! Any other ideas? Haven't got the room to put them in separate tanks and really dont want to rehome her!

Thanks in advance,
Leanne

P.s. If anyone wants eggs please see the ads/classifieds part of the forum!

I don't think axolotls can surprise me with what they get up to any more!!
I have a divider ( bluish edge strips) which is rather flimsy, after a few escapees ventured over to the wrong side I had to wedge it with some polystyrene , rocks and plants in pots. I have seen the contents of both sides scrabbling near the top too so i ended up dropping the water level by an inch. Now they just hang out and look at each other longingly .
I felt after my female laid eggs a second time in a month that they had to be separated by the divider. In the end , as I have no space for a second tank I re homed her as they would both get quite frantic ...apparently they release pheromones to attract mates.

Oh no! I really don't want to have to rehome her! Mine's got blue strips too (the divider), maybe I can convince my parents to let me have a smaller second tank in the loft for a few months to give her enough time to build herself back up before I put them back together again! Eeeek!!

Anyone else any suggestions?
P.s. whilst she's laying should I have the lights off?

Be careful with a tank in the loft. My loft often reaches 30 degrees Celsius on sunny days. The cellar stays a nice cool 18 maximum. If its only for a few months you may be better with a small covered tank outside in the shade.
