i have a female triturus vulgaris that was brought to me today which has bloat, i don't think it is egg retention (even though she is laying, and always has an egg coming out of her cloaca) because she floats especially to one side. she does have a few very faint red patches around her legs too, could this be red leg?!?

please can someone help me quickly!!!

i've just noticed something, after holding her up to the light, she seems to have large patches of gas under the skin, in the body cavity...

ive seen this in ensatina, i dont know what causes it, but i know my friend got rid of it by changing the substrate and using bottled water. once again, i dont know what causes it or really how to cure it, but that worked for him.

okay thanks, it is in a sterile tank with no substrate, i'll use only bottled water from now on (i have been using pond water so far). the thing is it developed it over night, in the evening, when it was caught, it was swimming on the bottom, really lively, and in the morning it was floating on the water...

yeah, it developes over a night or day and it will go away that quick as well... i hope that works for you... other than that, i really dont know. good luck!

If it was wild caught, then maybe you should put it in at least a more natural setup then a tank. Maybe the best thing is to bring it back where you found; however, it may be best to put her in some type of transitional environment, outdoors but out of reach to animals and then, once she recovers, release her.

yeah, she is in a shed with natural light coming through, so the temps and every thing are right, but i don't want to put her right back into the wild because she can't swim underwater and would be a target for fish
