Hi can someone please help im really worried this started a few weeks ago but i just ignored it thinking their hardy and it will just get better , my axi is about a yr old i hatched it from an egg it is a lecustic type and looks really ill so i have just put in a bowl and not sure what to do next.
Its normally really white but now is covered in red veins, white spots, the end of its tail has frayed a bit and has now just started to bleed , it looked like it was floating a bit when it was just trying to feed and floating to the side slightly . Its fin down tail also looks quite frilly. It doesnt look like fungus though. Also its back legs dont really seem to work often. Please help , thanks kelly x

Hey there!

I didn't see you mention in your post so I'll ask, is the axolotl eating?

The fraying tail and bleeding I've only seen when external damage has been done. Are there any tank mates that could have caused it or anything she could have caught it on? How often have you seen it bleed?

White spots, as far as I'm aware, most often occur when there has been an increase in temperature. What is the temperature of your tank?

Also, what are your parameters? This could provide us with an answer for all the things you've noticed but I'm mostly asking because of the appearance of red veins.

You also mentioned your axolotl doesn't often use it's back legs. How does it appear when it tries to? Can it use them?

Admittedly I can't see the red veins or white spots in the images, but it might be my eye sight! I don't know if you already have but if not have a look here: Photos of Sick Axolotls to see if there is anything that you can match to your own axolotl. In the meantime keep it cool and calm and as always, if things worsen, be sure to get your axolotl to a vet with knowledge of the species.

Hi thanks for getting back to me

Its eating same as normal if not finding it a little bit harder due to it floating a bit and being unbalanced

No tank mates

Back legs seem to go round in circles like propellers not like the front ones move

Sorrry pics might not be very clear spots dont look like fungus they are like pin head size covering the hole of its back

Ive only noticed the blood once when i moved it into a bowl before to put in the fridge

Ive taken it out of the fridge now because im scared its too cold its stil in bowl though

Im also scared to a salt bath it just seems so fragile

My poor little jelly

Don't worry, if there is no fungus there is no need to carry out a salt bath.

I understand you not wanting to keep your axolotl in the fridge. If the axolotl is eating and there is no chance of impaction causing the floating just keeping the axolotl in cool water should suffice. Whatever you do, be sure not to distress your axolotl by any sudden temperature changes.

By any chance did the axolotl have its back limbs nipped off when younger? I have an axolotl who uses her front left arm in the same way you have described. She'd had her front limbs nipped off before I got her and even though they grew back she wasn't quite able to use the left one properly.

One other thought, are you using a conditioner in your water?

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
