I had 10 eggs, laid approx 19/12.I kept them in small hatchery tank with no substrate at 77f with airstone, all was well, today they have all gone grey although the embryos still moving. They are dying and I am terrified and dont know what to do.Please can anyone help a frantic newbie who deperatley wants to save her babies,Thankyou

Just an update on previous post,ALL are dead now.I kept them ok but the lot are now dead.Should I give up trying to raise them or should I try to buy some more eggs from some one and try again, feel really sick this has happened,Does anyone know a uk breeder who may have eggs or hatchlings for sale please.Thankyou

Jan- did they get fungus on them? Is that what you meant by "gone grey"?

If the temp was 77 degrees fahrenheit that is too warm.

There is a section on breeding and caring for eggs and young at caudata's sister site:

www.axolotl.org

Sorry about your eggs.

If you really want to keep axies Jan please visit the site cynthia quotes and have a good read of the FAQs and stuff. This will help you be more prepared.

Just out of interest how/where did you acquire your eggs on this occaision?

Axies aren't too difficult to find in pet shops and on the net but don't expect too much to come in the way of advice from most sources. I know of a couple of pet shops near Manchester that have a couple of young wildtypes available and look to be in good health atm. But read the site first and check outsome recent threads to see if you really do want to keep axies.

she bought them from me. and just to let you all know i packaged them fine in a cleaned out bottle and put in with elodea plant and packaged in a brown bag with newspaper and they arrived to her the next day.

if you go to manchester to buy one they will charge you £30 for one but if you make out thats a ridiculous price they should charge you £7.95 for the wildtype ones. but bolton sometimes has them for that price and one in hindley i think still has some leceustic ones for £10

Jenny, no need to be so defensive. I gave eggs to my friends and sent some to people i deemed experienced enuff to have them. Unfortunately none of my last batch survived longer than 2 months.

I really hope those u sent out fair better.

As for prices shops will charge what they think they can get. I've seen wilds at 22 quid last week, albino/leucy's at 30 quid...but i haven't seen any melanoids in the shops. Cheapest I have seen wildtypes at is 8.95 a few months ago.

Thanks for the help, I kept the eggs at 77f as I read that this will hatch them in 14 days,The eggs went from clear and glass like to a smokey grey and the embryos stopped moving.I am not a bad keeper as I have raised tree frogs and toads , this was my first attempt at owning axols, something I have always wanted to do.Just popping to the local pet shop is not an option for me, as a non driver living in a small village in Cumbria. All my herps have to be bought on line. When the eggs arrived they were fine, in fact they were crystal clear and all the embyros were twitching, I dont know what happened to them.I have done research on axols and considered myself to be able to keep the eggs alive, obviously not.

Yeppers, i think 77 is definately too warm. Even though cooler temperatures slow down development, thats the way to go. I have been keeping my eggs at about an average of 18C/65F. Its been fifteen days since they were laid. Though they're not hatching all of them are healthy. There were a few infertile ones but no fungus. I think that has to do with the temperature of the tank.

Expect to see hatchlings around 21 days. I kept a good bunch at 18C for their entire period and they hatched 21-23 days in.

Thinking of getting some axolotls in the next few weeks and was browsing past posts.

this site (if you look near the bottom, and the writing to the left of the tank and below the albino axolotl) it says eggs can be kept at 77

hey jan i have baby axies that have just started hatching but they would have to picked up from hartlepool in the north east as i dont really like the idea of posting them.

Thanks very much for the offer, but thanks to a memeber, from here I am now mummy to 2 wonderful young axies.I have been in touch with Jenny as I was bitterly dissapointed with those eggs and she told me she did not have any to replace them,However I see from a popular auction site, this is now not the case!I haven't been here for quite a while as to be honest I spend an awful lot of time with my axies as I find them so fascinating.I have only encountered one problem since I received them and that was a power cut, but I overcame that by sitting next to the tank blowing in a gentle air current through an air line and air stone, so all is well

awww cool. but if you ever want to buy any more then you know where i am.ill probably never be able to shift my baby axies.lol.

enjoy your axies...they will make you happy.mine certainly have.lol.

after a friend of mine visited this site to read previous posts after i told him about all the hassle i got in here i have kept a tab on this post because i wanted to see how it was explained about the temp after someone pointed out about this site saying 77 is fine and now i want to make a comment.

i never said i did not have any eggs left in the email sent to you. well i did but that was the last time they bred when i infact had no eggs!! and that id email you if/when my axys lay more eggs.

i then emailed you a week or whatever ago saying they have laid eggs and that i would send you two axys (free of charge) in a couple of weeks when they were eating more bigger easier food. if you wanted eggs i would have gladly given you some i had loads! but you previously said in an email from when they first laid that youd rather have two hatched, more developed axolotls

im extremely unhappy with the way you have therefore made me out to be here and think you have been rather two faced

it was not even my fault in the first place with the apparent 'dissapointment' in eggs you received. no one else has had problems. you even said they were fine when received. and i am not saying it is your fault that you kept the eggs at 77 as it does say 77 is fine. but it is extremely two faced the way you have slated this forum and then you are slating me!

if you read previous posts that you wrote yourself you will see that you are obviously contradicting yourself and you are making out that you complained to me about the eggs? i can prove this is not the case and that i was the one that made gestures of giving you 2 axys free of charge. and i can prove this as i keep all emails!!

I have been in touch with Jenny as I was bitterly dissapointed with those eggs and she told me she did not have any to replace them,However I see from a popular auction site, this is now not the case!

if you read this section of her post you will see that she is!

and what are the conseqences? that i cant rejoin after 3 months? damn!

all i wanted to do was give my side of the story! which should be totally obvious anyway as i stated before she is contradicting herself!

Jenny, You have not been entirely honest with me here have you? I will not use this forum to argue with you over this but may I ask how you know for sure no one else has had trouble .I have checked the ebay feed back and there's not one mention of the eggs people bought.I see that this last lot of babies on ebay netted you a fair amount of money,£90 wasn't it? So I can see you repeating this practice very often,I do hope you are not even contemplating mailing them out right now in sub zero temperatures.I am not two faced Jenny, I was just a very guillable person buying those eggs and beleiving that out of 10 I would have an excellent hatching rate.To clear up another matter, you offered me a baby, a hatchling and I told you that after last time I did not feel confident enough to raise it.I am not slating you Jenny, just questioning your true interest in your pets,I think you may turn into the amphibian equivelant of a puppy farmer. As I now have my own axies, from an excellent breeder, received in first class health and condition, I don't see why our paths need cross again.

Hi Mike,
I deleted Jenny's last two posts and banned her from this thread.

Ed

Thanks Ed for being on top of these things.

Jan,
Noticed you are north west UK and have found a reliable source, can you recommend the breader? If you do not want to post it here I will take a private message. Dec.
