i dont know what happened i switched my axies into my 200 gallon tank. Its been about 2 1/2 weeks since i put them in there the only thing i can think of is it might be my sand? i bought some sand from home depot and its kinda dusty and muddy? 2 of there tails are curved up what does that mean? i need all the help i can get, im starting a water change now, and they have been on a staple diet of axolotl pellets from the indiana university place? and the one that was dead his gills were all shriveled so i thought it might be the water quality

sorry to hear about your loss chris,

I have a couple questions and some suggestions

-Did you wash the sand before you put it in the tank?
-What is your ammonia level reading?
-Did you cycle the tank?
-what do you mean by curved up?(picture please)
-Did you notice anything wierd about their appetite?
-how is their color?

I think that you should get them into some other tank, if you have one cycled that is. I suspect the water quality in this situation since i use the same food as you and havent had anything wierd happen with it.
Definatly test your water quality and keep in touch with everyone here on the forum

Good Luck~Heather

take them out of that tank first , and put them in the fridge on separated containers with new fresh water, then check the water parameters and think on something that could do this , maybe filter too strong, maybe not a proper sand, maybe not well washed tank as it was a new one, try to post a picture of your axos and of your sand too.

OK i tested water witha 5 in one test kit every thing was in the normal range, i didnot wash sand i put it in then filled it up and then it was murky so i drained it then filled it up again, I cycled the tank for 2 1/2 weeks and im trying to post pics but i cant remember how to do it?

Click 'UPLOAD ATTACHMENT',

then BROWSE through your hard-drive to find where your pictures are stored,

choose the one you want,

then click UPLOAD.

Finally post

the tank should still be cycling after 2 1/2 weeks. Maybe test for ammonia nitite and nitrate again.

Hey Chris, Very sorry to hear about your loss. Always wash new sand before you put it in the tank. What I think might have happened is the dust from the sand might have been the cause of your Axolotls death. I have the same sand from Home Depot. What I would stir the sand up a bit and let the filter take care of the dust and wait maybe two weeks to put them back in the tank. The water should be nice and clear before you put your axies back in. Hope this helps

That's a bummer. I think you need to remove the sand, rinse it thoroughly (many times), and start over. Play sand has a lot of fine material, and I'm guessing that it irritated the axies. In the meantime, keep the axies in smaller containers.

Before the one axie died, were they behaving normally for the first week?

ok i know how to put the pics on i just cant fugure out how to shrink them too 801 x 801 or whatever I went to home depot and read the back of a bag of sand and it said it contained crystiline? or something- silica! silica is bad right? and on the front of the bag it said clean safe non toxic sand! ON THE BACK IT SAID IF INHAILED OR CONSUMED GO TO A DOCTOR! anyway they r doin a little better in the fridge should i salt bath them? any help on pic trouble will help thanks

Move your pictures in Adobe Photoshop or Windows Photoshop.

Find the 'Image size' button and then simply type in 150 x 150 (I think thats the biggest this forum allows), then save them and upload on here.

Chris - That looks like it may be an infection with that red ring there. You may want to seek a vet or try medication.

From IU:
The Richard Gordan lab (University of Manitoba) offers the following: We've had great luck treating skin infections and skin parasites, "fuzz" on the gills and apparent fungus in nip wounds, and red sores or skin irritations with Nitrofura - G, a compound of Furazolidine, methylene blue, and postassium dichromate available from most fish stores. We use it in the dosage recommended by the manufacturer. It goes in the water as a yellow powder that turns the water blue. The animals usually improve rather dramatically over three doses.

Use the medicine described in Cynthias post. Furan 2 is about the same and will do fine. Your axolotls look rough but it should snp them out of it. You shouldn't have to much water quality trouble with that big of a volume of water. I think the main problem was your substrate.

ok well the two with the fungus died

. All i can say is if you dont KNOW for a fact that the sand is clean dont buy it, the kind i bought said clean right on it but it ended up killing 3 of my six axies. Thanks everyone who helped out, Chris
