Hello fellow Axolotl enthusiasts!

These are my two cuties, Pearl (leucistic) and Toothless (wild type).

They are nearly 3 years old, my sister and I cared for them from eggs. My sister is a PhD student at Wits uni in Johannesburg, based at the Evolutionary Sciences Institute (which is where I got my ones through) There are four resident axies at the institute which my sister lovingly cares for.

We have done our research on how axolotls found their way to South Africa. A decade or so back, some PhD students were studying axolotls for their unusual regeneration abilities so they had a handful of axies brought to the ESI for this purpose. The four remaining at the ESI as well as my two are descended from the initial axies brought over.

In SA axolotls are not illegal to own or breed but it is currently against the law to sell them. They are in a grey area with our exoticbpet laws. It's also problematic getting them into SA legally as it seems the only way to get more in is through a university with the objective of study in mind.

Since owning axies I'd love to find a way to get more legally so that I could be a breeder. Maybe one day. Hope whoever reads this here enjoys my story :)
