jsut to let you in this section of forums know that the vivarium room at my college is giving away a hellbender salalmander. any opinions and tips would be greatly appreciated, since im trying to get this guy.

Well I will try to keep this short since it is a touchy subject for me.

Hellbenders are relatively easy to keep alive, but fairly difficult to keep thriving. I definitely would not encourage anyone to keep them unless they have 1000.00+US to invest on equipment with the goal to breed them (the only good reason to have them). Also PLEASE do not support the commercial collectors!

Jesse, your case is different since this is a "second hand" hellbender. You will need a tank of at least 75 gallons and a 125-200 gallon tank is more ideal. A couple canister filters and some airstones will work for filtration. Powerheads are good to move the water, but they also add heat to the water. A good chiller runs 600.00+US, but you might be able to get by with a 300.00 thermoelectric unit(they can only bring the temps down by 5-10 deg though). If the water is moving well, they can take temps around 75 in summer, but lower temps are obviously better.

We can get into feeding, etc... if you decide to take the animal.

hope this helps some.....

well erik after having been drowned with reasons why not to take it i have decided to jsut let it go to a zoo, thank you though, and by the way do you keep hellbenders, because if you do perhaps i can arrange to have it shipped to you throught e school.

Sounds like we have got a wise man among us!

I think that is a sound decision both for the hellbender and you.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
