I have given these two axolotls a new home few months ago, as the previous owner didn't like them and they were living in very poor conditions (dirty water and no regular feeding). they now live in clean water and i feed them once a day.
My pink axolotls eye turned white about a week ago and now both eyes are white and i can see the pupil. He doesn't react or look up when i come close to the tank like he used to and just seems to be slower then usual getting around the tank.
Is there anything i can do to treat it? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Cookiehoover,

Sorry to be a pain, could you provide a little more detail on the tank parameters and set up?

Has the tank been cycled? If not, have you tested the water for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and pH? If you have, could you post your readings? If not, could you post some information on when and how much water is removed and replaced during partial water changes? This information will help us ascertain any problems with the water chemistry which may be affecting the axolotl's health.

What is the water temperature? This is very important.

What does the axolotl's main diet consist of? Nutritional deficiencies in the diet can lead to major health problems if not corrected.

Is there any water current in the tank? Axolotls find water movement to be highly stressful.

What size is the tank?

A point of major concern is the substrate (ground cover) shown in the photo attached. Gravel of that size will be swallowed by the axolotls (guaranteed!) and these ingested stones can cause serious health complications such as impaction (a blockage in the gut) which can be fatal.

The safest substrates in an axolotl tank is bare bottom tank, or sand if you prefer a more 'natural look'. Bare bottom tank is the easiest to maintain and keep clean (axolotls are complete slobs!). Grot trapped under the substrate can wreak havoc with water quality which is most important to an axolotl's health and wellbeing.

Could you post some further photos of the axolotls? I've stared intently at the photo (three times!) and in all honesty I can't see a problem with the albino's eyes .

Sorry for the bombardment of questions! Your axolotls are lovely and I hope they thrive for you.

Welcome to the site!

Hi cookiehoover,

nice nick - that could be mine :bowl:

I totally agree with Julia. I stared at the pic and couldn´t find your problem. The eyes of your axies are really ok. :D

But the gravel should be removed immediately - it´s very dangerous for your axies.

Good luck and have fun!

Tina

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
