Has anyone had issues with this decor?

I've lost two axolotls to a "mystery" illness. All same symptoms. Now a third is sick. I still can't diagnose the issue. The only constant in all situations has been this decor. It hasn't smelled bad or seemed unsafe (reviews online are fine...) But I'm running out of ideas as to what could cause this issue I'm having.

Well, it's something that is painted, so the paint eventually breaks down and comes off.
The only caves I buy are made by a company called Conceptual Creations. They are just molded rock material.... I've never had a problem.
I would take out the decor if you suspect it is making them sick. It would really stink if it is, since it's supposed to be aquatic safe.

I checked one of your other post. You mentioned putting ph neutralizer along with your water changes. That might be one of the problems. For the most part, people here suggest not using those types of chemicals as axolotls are prone to absorbing them through their skin.


You might want to check all your water parameters ( ammonia, nitrates, nitrites,etc). It's best to use a liquid test for these things. I can tell you that I have the exact same ornament and my axo is doing just fine with it.( I've had it for around 4 months now)

I don't know what product you're using but I've heard some bad stories about the pH up/down products. Even axies dying because of the chemicals. Axies can live in pH range of about 6.5-8.0 so it's not usually necessary to use those products.

I have that exact decoration in one of my tanks and the axie in that tank has never been sick at all.... Im gonna go with the ph product guess as well...
