Has anybody else noticed how many fire-bellied toads are in pet shops lately? Any pet shop I go to (petco, petsmart, pet supplies plus, etc.) they have at least 20 fire-bellied toads all jammed in one tank. Obviously, they are all wild-caught and crowded together. It's very sad to see this.

Is there anything I can do about this? Something tells me that this isn't right.

Yes, noticed the same thing.... sad. Looks like total over-exploitation of these toads...

I wonder why there is such an overstock of these toads lately...

Indeed :/

Yup. When I caught situations like these, I preform a mini psychic game with the store owner or the guys responsible for the store by that time, and usually results in shame and embarrassment on their side. You'll feel much better afterwards. Believe me. Be sure one or two clients are with a fixed eye on you as you preform your game.

How would I be able to perform a mini psychic game? Spunds like good fun at the expense of pet store employees.

It is because they breed readily and are available cheaply. Demand for them is a lot lower than the breed rate it seems.

I believe eljorgo is referring to showing up their lack of knowledge of the species, to be able to play the game you would need to learn about the species Bombina bombina.

Sounds like good fun! :D

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
