Hi there,

I am in the motions of preparing to keep an axolotl of my own and am curious on how they are to be handled.

Someone I used to know picked his up and carried it for a few minutes at a time (say five maximum). However, I was wondering if this is just stressful for the axolotl and if the extent of their handling should be from a tank to a container when cleaning.

Thanks in advance :)

Sounds like taking a goldfish for a walk! Not a good idea.

I know people who rub their bellies, but it's best for them if you don't touch them. Simply tank to container and back. It's not so bad, though. Mine are so squirmy I can't imagine trying to hold them.

Thanks to both of you

I did think it was a bit odd, but thought it may be possible due to their ability to breathe out of water for short periods of time.

I think I'd prefer to just sit and watch them anyway!
