I upgraded my tank about 3 weeks ago and used all of the previous water which filled up halfway. Over the next 5 days I added treated water. This weird growth started growing on the silicon now everything is fine ph, temp, nitrite, nitrate and ammonia. Axies seem completely fine. Has anyone encountered this or know what it is? How do I get rid of it? It comes off of I scrape it but is extremely messy.

Re: Growth on silicon

It only grows on the silicon and is yellow and bubbly looking

Are you using a water conditioner containing aloe vera?

Re: Growth on silicon

Thanks for your reply. But no, I use correct amount of seachem prime. It removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Detoxifies nitrite and nitrate and provides slime coat.. Says nothing about aloe Vera. Is aloe bad ingredient to have in a primer? I've been trying to upload a photo but not working

Re: Growth on silicon

If it protects/provides their slime coat then chances are it DOES contain aloe vera :D
It will be the aloe going a bit mouldy i imagine but i could be wrong

Thanks for your reply :D Aloe wouldn't harm my axies then? But will the aloe going mouldy affect them? I've been using this primer for years and have never seen it, I only noticed it a few weeks after I got the new tank  .. I've wiped it all off and it was SO messy, hopefully it doesn't grow back!

Re: Growth on silicon

It may be that the silicone isnt entirely smooth ect and its sitting in the holes, i had my tank set up for around 8 months before i noticed anything in mine, and sure enough it was the aloe sitting on my air tube(for my air stone) and silicone ect haha.
Just use your hands or a sponge ect to wipe it off just before you do a water change, then the water change will remove any floaty bits.
Aloe helps axies slime coats, just be careful not to add too much else it makes cleaning harder :p

Ahhhhh thank you! Yeah there was weird slimy stuff on my air pump tubing too. Good to know it wasn't anything too serious.;) The guy at my local aquarium shop said it was nitrate poisoning?? Even though the test was fine. Don't think ill be going back to him!

Re: Growth on silicon

Haha no, if your liquid test kit is coming back fine and its not out of date then im certain it is just the aloe :D
