ive seen a few posts from people outside uk keeping great crested newts and i was wondering firstly could i obtain a pair from a supplier in the uk and secondly where would i stand legally on actually being able to keep them thanks

In the UK, you can keep Northern crested newts (Triturus cristatus, the native species) ONLY if they are captive bred.

There are quite a few people who breed them, try placing a wanted ad here if you want to find some. You'll find it easier to buy juveniles than an adult pair, though.

The other three crested newt species (T. carnifex, T. karelinii, and T. dobrogicus) can be kept freely, though it's illegal to release them into the wild. Plenty of people breed these, too.
