Last week I was at a pet store and seen some gravel for freshwater tanks that was nearly as fine as sand . Since this is a natural color I was wondering before I buy bags and bags IF anyone has used it for their axolotls ?
I've never used sand sold for aquariums before. A couple things to check are if the sand is meant for marine aquariums or not. Most marine sands are made of crushed coral and other such things that are high and calcium carbonate and may change your waters hardness and pH quite quickly. Other sands marketed as marine or marine/freshwater are inert like quartz sands.
My preferred sand source is pool filter sand that you can buy at any pool and spa store. This sand is usually of a uniform mesh and has a relatively low dust content compared to play sand (which I have also used to great success.) Also, it is far cheaper than sand marketed to aquarium owners. A 50 pound bag cost me only $7 plus tax. Not a bad deal.
