I want to create a grass type bottom for my tank and wondering if there is a plant i can get that will spread across the bottom? Or is this not recommended? :)

There are several species that spread in a "carpet" like fashion.
Most are not very tall though. baby's tears and 4 leaf clover are two that come to mind.
I had a spreading grass in my aquarium tank at one point but, I can't remember the name.. and my pleco decided it was fun to tear up so I took it out.

there are several species of Val that will grow in clumps, and create a string of plants in your tank. Microsword will do something similar, but also tends to clump.

This is a great thread that was started to show how to densely plant but still keep a more bare bottom.

Sand won't be enough for a lot of plants to get very hardy.
if you're not set on grass, their are plants like java fern and moss, as well as some anubis that don't require a lot of soil.

At the moment i have a pretty planted tank just fancied a grass like bottom after seeing another tank like that.. Not too keen on soil idea though sounds messy lol!! Xx

Soil isn't actually that messy lol

I don't have soil in my planted tank, just Laterite base and a very small mm gravel on top. I've never used it in my salamander tanks though with the metals (iron, etc)

There is a plant called HC (well there is a longer name for it, but go on any planted tank forum and they will know what you want). It is low growing, will grow in sand, looks great.

But you need to start it in like 1/8 inch of water and let is spread for a few weeks and then add the rest of the water. Otherwise it makes a mess.

That sounds way too hard. My friend tried it and got like a 3inch by 3inch patch after months and months of trying.

Have a google for 'java moss walls'. I'm sure you can just as easily use one as a floor.
