SO i got a 2 ft tank today. If i can convince my parents to let me keep it(as they dont think ive got enough room for it) id want either an axolotl or a lod of fire bellied newts...cant decide. WHat do you think? If you ahd a spair 2ft tank what would you use it for?

I would probably say fire bellied newts, because I never really cared for axolotls much (I don't like how they look). This is simply my opinion though.

If I had a spare 2 foot tank I would probably get another mudpuppy

. I simply love the animal.

What ever you desire. I would probably get a few firebellies. (Ryan-There's a lot of people in the axolotl forum who would argue against that. Not looking right.

But I don't care for them much either.)

Yeah I know

. Oh well everyone has there opinions right? If everyone liked the same thing this world would be boring.

Connor (that's my son's name too! wicked!)Have you ever kept caudates before? If you havn't, I would recommend firebellies. Those were my first newt species, and I think they are very good for a beginner. The are one of those forgiving species...
Axolotls' require close monitoring of ph and nitrates, they also need a lot of water changes, and need to be kept at a temperature between 16 °C and 18 °C. Research both species really well to determine how much effort and time you want to spend on your pet. I am not saying you cannot do it- just make sur you know what you are getting in to!

i would say axolotls, if only for the fact that i believe they are more intelligent, funnier, more enjoyable to watch, and more of a genuine pet(having kept both species).
fire bellies are very nice if you want them for their display purposes, but if its a true pet your after, then when it comes to aquatic stuff your after, you cant beat an axie(although they are on par with oscars and some species of turtles)

Ive got 2 fire bellied newts at the minute and was wondering if i should upgrade their tank size for them and get them some more friends. The first one i had(who died as a result of leaving bloodworm in the tank for too long or from shock from transfering him from one tank to another without climatising)wasnt as active as these guys! Theyve got sooo much character!
Ive been after an axolotl for a while now...descisions!!!!!!
My parents arent letting me set it up yet!
"DOnt have enough room.Your bedrooms crowded enough!"
Ive offered to close down some of my fish tanks like my 2.5 gal betta one. Ill leave it a while,do real well in my end of year exams, and ask them again!!!! THeyll budge eventually!

Wait a second. A firebelly died inthe tank from a rotten bloodworm? Did you clean out the tank?

Id get an axolotl just coz i LOVE them so much!
But I hope you have fun no matter what you choose!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
