Hi,

Was wondering if anyone could recommend a good place to buy axolotls in Melbourne, Australia? Thought I'd see if I could get one from a breeder before I ordered one from LFS

Here is a great place! there is a 'for sale' section of the forum where people sell axolotls they breed fairly often.

Hi Joanne

I just thought I'd let you know that we just had our second lot of eggs and you can have some of ours if you want :) Depending if you have experience and time to raise, you can have eggs or youngsters very soon from us.

Their mum is a white albino (non lucistic), all white and pink and hence her name is Peony

And her dad is really nice even golden color (Sovereign).

You are welcome to message me and my wife Ange. We work in Melbourne :)

Eggs are white right now, the little babies taking good shape already. We are likely to have mostly golden color I think, this is what happened last time. I suppose we may as well call ourselves private breeders. We are happy to breed them for people who love axies, but found that pet shops mistreat axolotls so we don't provide them any now. All our babies looked so healthy. We had many happy owners pick them up from last lot.

Hi Dal,
I'm setting up a tank this weekend and just wondered if you have or are likely to soon have any little axies for sale? And if so what age and colours? I'm not so sure about babies, mostly because i'm not so confident about the feeding (though im sure id figure it out) but also that i want to get two and have read about not putting juveniles in with each other. At what age do you normally sell yours and are they big enough to share a tank? I would just not like to get one and then never be able to find another the right size to suit it, so unsure with the babies whether to try and divide my tank (i don't have enough room for another tank) and get two babies together or get one baby, let him/her grow a little then look at getting another later down the track:confused::confused::confused:

I'm also interested in adding another axie to our family. Actually, I'd like to get one for my classroom since we can't bear to part with any of ours from home. :) Do any of you know of someone in the USA that will have juveniles available in August?

I have baby axolotls I am willing to give away for free.
I am in Melbourne, western suburbs.
The colourings are likely black (mother) or wildtype (father).

The babies are currently only two weeks old. I would think they will be more ready to go to new homes in 6 weeks, or whenever they get their back legs. However I am happy to give them away at any stage, if the new owners are willing to feed them BBS or other live food (I can help with that too!).

I raised two juveniles together, feeding them every day on frozen bloodworm, and later earthworms. They reached adulthood in 8 months. They are not hard to look after even as juveniles. I had never run an aquarium before that - now I have succsesfully bred the pair without even trying!

I visited many aquariums around September last year across Melbourne - western, eastern and central suburbs.
Prices varied between $20 and almost $40, with an average around $30 for an adult.

BUT! The adults I observed were often unhealthy or at least appeared to have under-developed gills, missing toes, etc. Some had gravel impaction. In the end I paid $20 each for two juveniles (about 8 - 12 weeks old I think, ~ 5 cm long) at a shop in outer east Melbourne. Both were missing limbs due to being kept together.
While they both recovered, I was really disappointed in the standard of care for all axies in all the shops I went to. There was only one store that I think cared for them well (which was not actually the one I bought from, in the end). I am willing to discuss this further by PM, I am not sure if I should point fingers at individual stores - whether positive or negative - on a public forum.

Finally - sorry for the long post - I am considering giving away or selling my male. I didn't intend to breed and I don't have two tanks to keep my pair separate. I have not made this decision final because I care for him having raised him for the last almost year, but if I could find someone in Melbourne willing to give him the proper care I would consider parting with him.
He is about 20 cm long, wildtype, not yet 12 months old, very healthy and obviously suitable to breed.
