I have searched these forums and and found a great deal of info...mostly provided by SludgeMonkey...but he also states that only real Tahitian Moon Sand is ok for axies, as many places just dye Aragonite black (which isn't ok for axies). I have also read that the company Caribsea's "Tahitian Moon Sand" would probably not be ok, since Caribsea tends to use Aragonite in their sand. SOOO, with that all said, does anyone know where I can get some real Tahitian Moon Sand, and not some imitation?

Seems when I search google for the sand, all that comes up is Caribsea....hopefully Sludgemonkey sees this thread and comes back with some advice.

Since many of those posts I made, things have changed a bit! (No, I had nothing to do with it. :D)

CaribSea has changed their product line up around a bit. The new names make it easier to determine what substrate is what.

CaribSea Super Naturals brand Tahitian Moon sand is perfectly axolotl friendly after the usual rinsing to removes dust. I actually just got a 50lb bag of the stuff a few weeks back. It is outstanding! (I am using this as a substrate in my "pond" cattle tanks. These are strictly for growing microfoods, plants, and providing read- to-use water for water changes.) I have also incorporated it into my "experimental" garden tank for my adult axolotls.

I have not been able to detect any water chemistry shifts in hardness or pH. I really like a jet black substrate in enclosures with light colored animals, like my albino and leucistic axolotls.

Just what I was hoping for! Sludgemunkey to the rescue. Thanks for the info.

All I can find are 20lb. bags...did you order your sand online or find it at a local store?

I special ordered the 50 pounder through a local source. They may be hard to get online as I am certain the shipping cost would be prohibitive. Looks like All-Aquatics.com carries it in that size, but it is currently listed out of stock.
