My plants havnt been doing well since I got my moonlight tube (no suprise)) so I decided to get em out of there n chuck in a load of plastic plants, things to climb and shade Gomez seems to love the low light so i get to see him alot more I also got him a huge cave for when hes feeling unsociable or wants a dig in the dark he loves it in there! Any suggestions of extra low light plants would be great, how do mosses cope?

Let me know wat you think n any suggestions for improvements!

thanks

Hahahahaa i love the hoops, he is a little gymnast! What a silly axie :D

Aw he's such a cutey!! Is he a melanoid?
I love that you have another floor in your tank. Does he go up there? I have been thinking of this for a while. My axies are fairly active and love climbing etc so i was thinking something higher up would provide them with some entertainment and time out from the other two!

Good work!

P.s where are the rings from, i want some!

I dont think he's a melanoid (could be wrong tho i thought he was when i first got him) he changes color so sometimes he's really dark almost black sometimes a greyish green color and sometimes grey blueish n gets a really white belly which makes him look like a great white shark with legs and a silly hair do! However I havnt seen any kind of reflective pigments at all and he doesnt have shiney eyes so he could be melanoid ahhh im sure someone will let me know!

I thought he was a wild type dunno bout melanoid If anyone can tell let me know!

Super Gomez loves his worms!

He uses his balcony when the lights are off as I think above it is too exposed to the light when its on, but it also provides handy shade under it so he still makes use of it when the lights are on, i really wanna cover it in moss!. He likes to sit up there to grab crickets he just pokes his head up rather than swimming all the way from the bottom of the tank, i think i might hav spoiled him abit with all his toys and furniture ive bought for him!

P.S the rings are from pets corner cost bout £2 gotta check in the budgie section tho!

He's cute and love the setup! If he doesn't have reflective rings around his eyes, then you have yourself a melanoid - a gorgeous one at that!

Love the ring idea too. I have a few who love to float, bet they would love something to just sit on near the surface - cool. ;)

Gomez is a melanoid! He seems very excited about the news he always knew he was abit special!

Thanks!

Anyone know how moss copes in very low light? or if i need a certain type of moss for the lighting conditions? or should I just stop thinking about moss with a light that dim?

thanks for the comments and feedback much appreciated and gomez loves the attention!

I think java moss and java fern grow just about anywhere - HERE you will find info about recommended plants - at the bottom of the page.

He looked melanoid to me. I want a melanoid sooo much! lol

As Shannon said java moss would probably grow.

Thanks for the info on the toys and the 2nd floor. I think i'm definately going to do that for mine now.

He looks like such a character and he deserves to be spoilt!!
I love to see axolotls that are so well looked after.

i love your tank......gomez is a lucky axie..........i think im off to the pet shop.....abbys tank is really boring compared to gomez's.........

Got a few pics this morning of Gomez making use of his balcony/shelf thing its actually a floating beach/platform for turtles n cost £10 from pets corner. To stop it floating about ive wedged a plastic base from one of my plants in between it and the glass to keep it level and secure. Ive seen other people with the shelf thing going on but they have either made them themselves or use a hang on the side of the bath syle soap dish/toiletries rack thing that just hangs over the side of the tank.

Oh I love the idea of the rings and shelf!! Looks like another trip to the petstore for me.. Gomez looks very happy indeed in his little underwater utopia.

I just wanted to let you know, Ed, that you have inspired me. :p

I'm setting up a new tank for when my (still very small) juvies are fully grown, and since the tank has a little more vertical space than I'd like, and a little less horizontal, I just went out and bought a bunch of those suction-cuppy shower tray thingies that I'll tinker around with until I get a "shelf" layer that I like, so they've got a few extra hangout spots.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Your truly a role model! You push Axie tank creativity limit to the floor! You pushed it so hard it's crying on the floor! I love your idea of aquascaping, a second floor(balcony)... Do you mind if I "borrow" your idea???:confused::confused:

Aww thank you everyone for your loverly comments by all means take some ideas for your own tanks turn your tank into an axolotl paradise, axolotls bring so much joy they deserve the best! If i give gomez something new to climb on squeeze through or hide in he'll make use of it all! I just wish I had the money for a bigger tank its only a 2ft x 1ft x 1 ft 60ltr i would love to give him an extra foot of space as hes getting to be a big boy im just so skint at the moment so it will have to wait but I think ive managed to utilises this little tank the best i can for the little guy hopefully in a 2-3 months i could get a bigger one!

Lookin forward to seeing your inspired tank set ups i might be able to nick a few ideas back off you guys!
Thank you again. im glad i seem to be doing everything right for my little monster judging by all the positive and flattering comments from everyone.

I'll try get some more recent pics up ive nailed the shade thing id say gomez spends 5% of his time in the cave and the rest out and about exploring because hardly any light gets through to upset him so no hiding he only seems to go into the cave to do a poo (i think hes trying to wind me up having to lift it up every time to get my turkey baster in there!) Hes so much more fun to watch when hes not hiding for days at a time, definately better to watch than big brother or the football!

Ooh with your suction cup shower tray thingys try wrapping them in moss wrapped up in a hair net to keep it in place might give a nice natural looking shelf thing n a nice soft surface for ur axie to sit on, Wish i had some moss!

thank you everyone

oooh almost forgot.... Gomez says hellooo!

the shower-tray things I got are just straight up plastic drawer-looking things that have suction cups, so I doubt I'll be able to get the moss attached to smooth plastic. i'm trying to decide if I want to put them upright and line them with river rock (to plant in, perhaps) or invert them, glue the river rock on with aquarium sealant, and/or glue a hide over it for axolotl enjoyment.

I do suspect that the extra "floor space" of a landing like this adds more use-able space for the axolotls. Now I'm just waiting on a new tank. (I've been planning ahead for the 3 babies I'm rearing). I suspect the person I contacted on Craig's List has flaked on me and left me in the lurch. :(

If I ever get the darn thing assembled, I'll be sure to let you know.
