Hi everybody --

I just found out yesterday that I'll be spending four weeks in Edinburgh, Scotland working with my school's Theater Company at the Fringe Festival in August. Since we're bound to have at least a day or so off, I was wondering - what interesting things can I find there - animals (not just caudates,) and other fun stuff?

Thanks!

Hey, I'll be in Scotland near the end of August, not sure exact dates yet. When are you going, maybe we could hook up and hit the zoo or something!

You could always visit Strathclyde Country Park in North Lanarkshire, nice bit of scenery, quite a lot of native wildlife to see and one of the Rangers is very into his Amphibians

...nice plug there Andrew LOL

there isn't too many that exhibit amphibians over here, edinburgh zoo have some and so does deep sea world which is only a few miles from edinburgh but neither have a huge selection.

And by august the palmates, smooths and cresties will mostly be all gone from the ponds apart from their larvae...

hope you have a nice visit

Thanks everybody --

Joan: I'll be in Edinburgh almost the entire month of August 3-29. Unfortunately, I looked at the schedule and I've only got about 4 days off the entire month (including the day I get in and the day I leave,) so my time will be tight. E-mail or PM me.

you can also go to butterfly and insect world near dalkeith, heaps o weird beasties not lots of amphibs unfortunitly, best bet is a night out on the town and get pissed as a newt

you can take pictures of the loc and catch that old cow "nessie" in action if you are adept and quick with the old cam.

No trip to Scotland is complete without seeing the highlands. If you're the "outdoorsy" type take your walking boots and have a day in the hills. Glencoe valley/Ben Nevis area is superb as are the Cairngorms. Even if you don't like climbing, the scenery is well worth the visit alone. IF you haven't seen much of Europe before I'd recommend jumping on a flight to Paris or Rome if you get the time.

Ok, Paris and Rome might be stretching it a bit

! I like to have a full schedule when traveling! Maybe Dot can abandon the theatre and go AWOL... Still, the highlands would be nice for a day trip.

Hehehe, thanks Mark for the suggestions! Oh man, if I abandoned the theater and went AWOL I'd be burned alive! :D

I talked to one of my best friends who's also going on the trip and she was interested in the zoo, so that may be a day trip if we can get transportation there (or it's not too far from where we're staying.) I've kind of got to stay in Edinburgh, but hopefully I'll definitely see some cool stuff.

And if anyone's so inclined to see Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" set in the 1960's in San Francisco set to music by Janis Joplin, the Animals and more, definitely swing by the Fringe Festival and tell them that the chick running the sound board is awesome.

have a nice stay edinburgh city has an excellent bus system and loads o taxis you should"nt have a problem getting about .if you come again and find you have more time in scotland ,a trip up the west coast is really beautiful most scots havent experienced some of the true scottish wonders, mind have a few whiskies, whilst in rome.....

I haven't been myself, but I've heard great things about the dynamic earth exhibit (http://www.dynamicearth.co.uk/). It's at the bottom of the royal mile so very easy to get to. I think someone else mentioned the sealife centre at South Queensferry too - that place is pretty cool and it's quite small so you wouldn't even need a full day to go there. And like aaron said, go for the whisky, a night in edinburgh's cowgate is always fun
