Hi all,

My axolotls, Blanca and Ebony have had babies!

The first batch only had about 8 embryos develop and only 4 have survived into little tadpoles who are now eating baby brine shrimp and daphnia!

The second batch of eggs is now about a week old and there are about 130 developing embroys this time.

As this is my first time breeding them, I have a few questions that I was hoping someone could help me with.

1. Will the babies glow? Blanca is an albino and Ebony is a leucistic and they both have the GFP gene so the they both glow under black lignt. Will the babies inherit this?

2. I'd like to separate the babies as they begin to develop their front legs so they don't bite each other. Can I use deli cups for this? Or will the plastic container leek toxins into the water that will harm them?

3. I will be selling some of the babies at a reptile Exo and I am also considering selling some to a local aquaroum owner. What is a reasonable price to ask for the babies?

Thank you so much in advance!

-Kristen

1. Most or all of your babies will glow. The GFP gene is dominant. If either of them have 2 GFP genes, they all will glow. Otherwise, about 75% will glow.

2. I think anything food-safe should be axolotl-safe. (More knowledgeable people correct me if I am wrong.)

3. I don't know.

Question: Ebony as a name for a leucistic? Please explain!

3. I don't know what the going rate is in your area, but I bought my baby axie for $5US. I would have been willing to pay more, however as babies were hard to find in my area. I probably would have gone up to ~$15US. Hope that helps!

We called him Ebony because he has big, beautiful black eyes!

I should also have mentioned that I won't be selling the babies until they are about 2 inches long and able to eat food that isn't living.

Thanks for your help!

-Kristen

I think food safe things are fine but any plastic can get bad bacteria on it (not sure that's the best way to explain it) but everytime you change their water you should just make sure to wipe the container out really well (it usually feels slimy and gross after a day anyways).
