Hello fellow axolotl enthusiasts,
I'm new to the fourms here (sorry for not formally introducing myself in the introductions forum!). I've had my axolotl, Gus, for about a year now, and I've been wanting to upgrade his tank, so I'm hoping to get a few opinions on my proposed tank. He's about 3-4 inches long and currently lives in a 20 gal long. I'd like to move him into the 40 gallon breeder I just picked up and use a H.O.T. magnum canister filter with a spray bar to lessen the strength of the water flow. I'd also like to silicone small 1"X1" glass backsplash tiles to the bottom of the tank as a substrate of sorts. Is this tank too big for him? Is a filter like the H.O.T. Magnum too strong? Are glass tiles okay to use in his tank? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

There is no such thing as too big a tank for an axolotl.
I currently use the Magnum 350 with a homemade PVC spray bar that works great.
The tiles should be fine as long as you aquarium safe silicone. just make sure you fit them tight together to prevent spaces that debris can get stuck under. Just make sure to include hides for the axolotl and you'll be fine.

3-4 inches and you've has him a year? Thats very small, he should be 9-12 inches and just about fully grown, even if you got him as an egg.

Siliconed down tiles are fine, if you search the forums you'll find a few ideas using the same principle.
