My axolotl has a stalk that’s been turning black. At first I thought it was some natural hyperpigmentation, but the gills are now almost completely gone. His other gills seem to be getting sparse too. He’s never been especially ‘fluffy’ (he is about 7-8 years old) but it’s definitely getting more extreme now. Is it fungus?

His behavior has seemed normal until today. This evening he refused food and was swimming around the tank while opening and closing his mouth. His gills are also curled. The room smells of air freshener. Could a solid deodorizer release enough to contaminate the water?

40 gal tank with canister filter and air stone. Sand substrate. Ammonia 0ppm. Nitrite 0ppm. Nitrate 10-20ppm. Temp 67F.

anything that is aromatic can be absorbed into the water, whether it is the cause of the issues though is unknown.
