Hello!
I have had axolotls for a while now and loving them! I would like to add a giant rock newt in one of my tanks. If I make a platform for the newt can I put them together? It seems their specifications are similar. I know most will say don't mix species unless you are well versed in both. I am only well versed in axolotls.
Any info would be great:)

You should never mix amphibians. They can secrete toxins from their skin that may be harmful to amphibians of different species. Or they could attack each other because they are different.

I have other tanks that are setup and good. Do you think that I could experiment? And if I see any signs of anything bad remove him immediately and give him his own tank?

Oh by the way! The reason I don't just put him in another tank is I want to see him and I can't bring another tank into my living room! There is 3, 55 gallons in here already:) I would also have to rearrange the fish in the other tank to give him a tank.

It's not entirely clear what species you are dealing with, but it's almost certainly Chinese and moderately to extremely aggressive. I would consider it a bad mix, since the Chinese species might be prone to injuring the axolotl, while a larger axolotl will easily be able to consume the highly toxic newt. Both have a reasonable chance of consuming fishes as well, although the newt could probably be housed with SOME fish species, especially if you don't mind smaller fish being eaten.

Some problems won't arise until later. By then, it's too late. Have you read the caudata culture article?

That's a question of morality. In my opinion it's wrong to expose your creatures to danger just for the sake of seeing if it will work.

You know the risks, make your own decision.

Thanks everyone! He's in his own tank now with a couple shrimp:) I appreciate the concern.
