Hey everyone! I'm new to the axolotl family and I just got my ph and ammonia level readers from Seachem today to monitor that everything is "a'okay". Currently in my 15 gallon tank, my ph level is at 7.4 and my ammonia level is reading ALERT of .005 ppm. I cycled 20% of my tank yesterday and just did another 20% cycle today. The Seachem ammonia monitor says it can take up to 4 hours to register decreasing levels. I fed my two axolotls this morning they are about 2.5 to 3 inches long took out their waste and food that wasn't eaten. I'm also trying to see about what plants I should get for my tank as well.

That sounds like a decent pH. I don't know what that ammonia level is about; that seems like a low level of ammonia to be alerted about. Doing regular water changes is probably a good idea regardless, but that seems like an okay level of ammonia. The biggest problem I see with your setup is the tank- are you sure a fifteen gallon is big enough for two growing axolotls? I have a 20 gallon for mine, and I still feel like I'd want to upsize if I was going to get another.
For plants, I highly recomend java ferns- I have one in my tank right now that I got from a local pet shop that's grown like an inch this month alone :) Moneywort also works decently, and I've heard good things about java moss as a ground cover.

Thanks for your reply! It has helped me a bunch. To answer your question about my tank, I will be upgrading to a 20 gallon soon while the axolotls are little to give them more room.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
