Just in case anyone has forgotten, Gersfeld 2003 (the DGHT AG Urodela's annual general meeting) takes place on October 17th through to the 19th in Gersfeld Town Hall, near Fulda, Germany. More details are on the events page of this site.

Sadly (for me mainly :p), I won't be attending this year due to other obligations, but who is going? If you live in Europe and haven't been before, I urge you to give it a try. You'll meet lots of like-minded enthusiasts, experts, (expert enthusiasts? ;)) and even scientists. If you don't speak German, don't be intimidated - you might miss out on the detail of most of the lectures but everyone knows that the most interesting talks take place at the bar ;).

Hi Mike,

I hope you find what you're looking for ;). What do you think of the lecture program?

Hi John

The lectures that particularly interest me are: Urodela of eastern Turkey...Neotony with the fire salamander?...Observations of North Vietnamese salamanders.
Otherwise you will probably find me muttering into my glass at the bar ;)

Hallo Mike, the conferencies are in German but after you can speak with the speaker in english if you have some doubt about the pictures or something like that, think not only coming German people, arrive people from Belgium,Holland,Catalonia,France,Ireland, etc, and not evebody speak German.
See you in Gersfeld?
Rudiger.

eeeeerrrrr, i find that listening to lectures will be boring. do people ever sell newts there?

Well on sunday morning offspring of animals are getting offered. I will be there and discuss my fieldtrip in the appalachians with plenty of habitat pictures and another shorrt lecture on keeping, breeding and rearing Hynobius retardatus. And believe me I have some slide with astonishing colors in juvenile retardatus...

Hopefully a record (as detailed as possible

) will eventually be made available to those of us who are unable to make it this time. I'm especially interested in Henk's lecture (don't make it TOO short!) on Hynobiid husbandry and the one on newts of northern Vietnam. And I'd like to forward a proposal to hold the next meeting...in Japan!

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
