Hi all :)

I've done all my research on telling the gender of axolotl's but I have just one question about it...

Does size matter in deciding their gender or is it more an age thing? Because my leuciustic Ajax has kept me confused ever since I got "him". At first I thought a boy then a girl then a boy then deff a girl now I have no freakin' clue. But then he is only a year old (Almost his birthday is next month). He's also about 21cm. I'll upload pics when I get home but right now he doesn't have a bulge but on certain angles it looks like its starting to swell (rather slowly). So is it that he is slowly getting a bulge and in another year or so will be a very definant male or is he just a slightly bulge female (which is common)?

I'M JUST SO CONFUSED:errr: I mean his gender doesn't matter to me. I love him whether he be a he or he be a she :D

Well all my axies are from pet stores, so I don't know how old they are but they all started out at 15cm. Three of them looked female until they reached about 22cm, then one of them bulged out properly and one was a well-endowed female. I got two more and at 15cm they are both very obviously boys.

It's probably best to assume you have a female until you see a proper bulge.

I know body shape is usually also a factor (females are round, males are slimmer) but i had a very fat melanoid who looked female from a top view and male from the side.

Here's my almost famous story:

Florence I've had since before she had legs.
She grew lovely and big, had a female body shape and no definite bulge.....until she was 19 months!! All of sudden Florence became a big boy!

He/she was a lot bigger than my male Finley who is a similar age but was showing as a male from about 8 months.

I've got a male who I thought was female since I got him/her, and 2 that I thought were male until I saw the difference between them and the male. I got 1 right out of the 4 though!

I have been told that if you look at them from above it's easier to tell - the male cloaca is visible as a bulge from on top, and the female isn't.

If you post a picture we may be able to help you out.
