If I get an Axolotl is this ok to use after cleaning? I've seen quite a few members in the UK post that they are using crazy sand and others post that they use play sand. Crazy sand seems to have some kind of silicate that makes it compact for sculptures while this is loose.
I've been looking at which lotl I would like to get and I think I've settled on a GFP Leucistic. It's my personal favorite of the colors (because freckIed little old man smiles are sooo CUTE!) but also, we have a lot of little kids around on the weekends and think it would be neat to explain to them this is a once a day trick they can do for 5 minutes at a time (if it feels like coming out and showing off for children who are being very good :)> Yes, I lie to small children to get them to behave. All the time. I enjoy it thoroughly.
Anyway, aside from encouraging a belief in magic in my small charges I think the blue play sand would pop colors on the amphibians gills when they are in full frill and contrast nicely with the green plants.
Not to mention that it fits in my budget and I can use the desert heat to dry and sterilize my sand so it can be sifted and re-used.
Is it an option? I've seen forums were it has been used in Cichlid (sp?) tanks with success.

I've seen other axolotls on the sand, and I wanted to try it out (but they don't post to AUS! ;( ) however I'm not entirely sure what it is made of and long term effects. It claims the colour won't leak but haven't found any reviews in regards to axolotls.

Personally I wouldn't bother with a GFP... it's actually harmful to them to be exposed to back lights so I would keep it to a minimal (which to me is never).

The sand should be OK.

But please don't buy a GFP axie and use it as a toy for children to shine a blacklight at - your axie will get stressed. Would you buy a dog and say 'look, if you pull its tail it growls!'? Thats what you do when you shine a light on a GFP axie - they get distressed because the INSIDES of their eyes glow along with the rest of them, and since they have no eyelids they can't close their eyes against the light. Your axie will learn to hide whenever it sees children, and if you try to chase it out it will learn not to trust you too.

If you want to get kids interested in axies buy some eggs and let the kids watch them grow.
