Frills and gills

iv been wondering about the gills and frills of axolotls, the length and "fullness' of them. Is this genetics? tank conditions? food?

from viewing alot of pictures on here and other sites, the axies range from cute stubs to elegantly long gills, or super feathery. have any of you axie lovers noticed when randomly the gills just changed in size or feathery-ness?

i wannt to say genetics and selective breeding but figured i would ask :rolleyes:

As far as i know (so correct me if im wrong) is it mostly genetic.
After gills where gone cause of bad conditions (filthy tank,bad feeding or diseases) its not always sure if the gills come back completely.
Sometimes they do but its always wait and see.
So it depends on multiple factors. And again this is what ive been told or readed so plse correct me if im wrong.
 
My axie's gills were in a bit of a state when I picked her up. 1 bout of fungus and some good food in her and they look like they are slowly regenerating. Having said that I think they will always be stubby and slightly malformed.

Genetics, tank mates, stress, water quality, diet - it's my understanding that they all play a role in gill formation.
 
I was also wondering this too. My new axi has quite bushy gills and i'm worried incase they get thin and less bushy. I'm not sure if its just my imagination, but I think my other axi's gills have thinned out a bit. I do regular water changes and feed them Red Worms.

Are there any types of food etc that can help stimulate growth?
 
when i first got Trogdor, i thought he would have stubby gills since they were just visable but they just grew faster than his head would and recently it they look bushier since adding guppies with his worm meal...mabey its over thinking but hmm. :wacko:

someone should try and breed two long gilled axies or visa versa lol
or better yet has any breeders done this wondering the same?
