Hello all. My cynops has been shedding frequently and I'm not sure why. She's been eating well. She shed about a week ago, then two or three days ago, and is currently doing so again now. She always gets it around her neck, and then just leaves it. She just lets it sit there. After a day or so I eventually put her in her feeding dish and help her out of it.

Any ideas of what else could be making her shed so often? She looks healthy as far as the outside is concerned. Nothing to be healing from or anything.

If she is healthy, should be normal. Shedding is a sign of growth. If she was small in body stature prior to you getting her, she is making up for lost time. How much are you feeding and how frequently? We don't always catch a skin shed, since it is frequently consumed by the newt afterwards. Since her shedding has been delayed, you have probably noticed it more. I try to have large rocks and narrow places for them to rub and free themselves of the molt. You can also treat the water with a water conditioner that has Aloe in it. This will aid in her slim coat and assist with shedding.
good luck,
Al

Thanks Al and Joan. Her water quality is fine. She's been eating 2-3 bits of nightcrawler every 3-4 days (although she has gone a two week period without eating of her own accord, but she's been eating for the past few weeks pretty good though).

First, sorry for my english, I'm not used to speak or write in this language!!!

I have just one question: Why newts eat their skin after they are sloughed?

Thanks guys and happy new year!!!

They eat their skin, I suppose, as a way to regain nutrients lost.
