I found this C pyrr in a pet store sometime ago, but finally got the pic off of my digital camera. Of course it wasnt for sale, and the owner of it named it "Godzilla" hahaha I really like the pattern on the belly.
Glad to hear you finally got a chance to see a C. pyrrhogaster in the flesh
Judging from its belly markings and coloration, it's a C. pyrrhogaster of the Sasayama race (C. p. sasayamae), which is found in parts of central Honshu Island, around Kyoto for example.
Hope you don't mind if i take liberties with your pic as it was a bit dark:
Jon - The plant in the background is a silk plant that they sell at the pet store, I have one in my P waltl tank and they love hiding in the leaves and looking around for food.
Jen - I asked the lady who owns the newt if she knew it was a girl. But of course she didnt, but then again we all know what to expect from pet store staff
Tim - Thanks for making that pic clearer, I dont have a photo editing program yet, oh did you get those pics of the C. pyrrhogaster males with the super long toes??
