Hi I’m looking for some advice on oxygen levels ideal for Axolotls. When I had an Interpet Internal Aquarium Fish Tank Cartridge Filter when my boy was young he had beautiful gills. Since he’s been in the big tank I changed the filter to a sponge filter. My question is does the sponge filter generate too much oxygen? His gills are rubbish now. All the parameters in the tank are as should be. The oxygen levels are the only reason I can think of to cause the reaction in his gills. Does anyone know??

I’ve heard that the more oxegon an a axolotl has in their tank the smaller their gills will be. In your case I don’t think it‘s necessarily a bad thing, your axolotl just may not need the bigger gills (to take in more oxegon) so they are simply shrinking. However if the sponge filter seems to cause to much of a current in your axolotl tank where your axolotl is showing signs of stress (gills curled, tail curled, fungus ect.) you might want to think about switching to a different filter with less of a current. Thsee are just my thoughts though but others might have a different opinion:). Hope this helps!

Hi thanks. I have just replaced the sponge filter with a water flow filter so will see how he goes over the coming months
