Hi everyone!

I've been setting up a new tank for the arrival of my new axolotl. I'm not sure whether she will be on the larger or smaller side of the 2-4 inches so I set up a five gallon for now, though I have a ten, twenty and fifty five laying around for later. Right now I've kept four neon tetras and a betta fish, though I will likely move them on her arrival (though it's no big deal to me if she eats them, either. I wanted to see what (if any) recommendations everyone could make. I want to buy some live plants for the tank, as well as some more rock for when she gets bumped into the ten gallon. Overall I just wanted to say hello and show everyone what I was working with so far. Thanks.

Regards,
Matt

EDIT: The tank and sand I used can be found here.

Just one thing i would add to this, everything else seems like you are all set to go. But what i found is when adding an axolotl into a tank with fish in it, the fish will dominate... And it stresses the lotl out a lot. Plus if he is under 6" i wouldnt recommend any tankmates other then another lotl. They can easily overpower the lotl. So i would recommend removing fish before adding axie. Expecially its a new home for the lotl so you want to make it feel safe for them. Let them get comfy.

And what i mean is if you addfish to a axolotl tank it seems to be the other way around where the axolotl dominates the tank. I have feeder guppies and i tried adding lotls to the guppy tank and the immediately went for the lotls, if i add guppies to my lotl tank they live maybe 24hours before disapearing.. The guppie goes nowhere near the lotls

one way to mitigate their behavior is to make sure the fish stay fed, they will be less inclined to go after those worms on your axolotls head ;)
if they still nip at his gills you might want to get another tank for the axolotl

Keeping them well fed didnt seem to work for me anywayys. But like i said if you add fish with your axies its completely different
