Hi all

We have some babies at the moment. Only little tots - about three weeks to a month old. Just today they have started occasionally having fits... Like they do when they are ready to break out of their jelly egg sacks.

Any ideas why? I'm just wondering if I should be worried about this behavior or is it normal? They get 100% water changes daily. I prepare the water they are to go into 24hours before hand and always treat it so its well dechlorinated and is at the same temp. They are currently eating bbs and microworms.

They seem happy enough other than their occasional fits.. and it's not just one of them doing it. It's all of them have a turn.

Do you mean they are just having a very energetic wriggle? Or does it seem something is wrong?

Mine do that if their tubs are disturbed - swim like mad all over the place. I assumed that was normal. TBH it's the best way to check they are all OK!

You can rule out water quality issues if you're changing water daily, but could it be salt from the BBS? It might be irritating their gills.

I know they are too small to see if they look distressed, but I wouldn't worry - if it's all of them it might just be an axie thing.

No, actual little fits. like tails curling round right to their heads and spazzing out really bad. No the normal wriggle like mad.

But it could indeed be the salt from them bbs. Didnt think about that. Thank you :)

Well I would normally associate that kind of thrashing with water quality or fungus - do you have a magnifying glass for fungus checking?

Salt irritation seems likely then

Do you have any established aquariums? Adult axies? I use tank water for newly hatched axolotls.
