first walstad tank! Success!

After many hours of effort, my walstad tank is a success! Stanley is waiting patiently in a 10 gallon while the tank gets its cycle on, and the water gets less cloudy! I'm so excited!! My only regret is I should have added more plants, but I'll get some more floating plants. Stanley is so confused haha. In other words I'm starting to believe Stanley is a girl... hm.

What exactly is a walstad tank? I've been hearing that word a lot but no one's ever really explained what it is.

A walstad tank is basically a glorified planted aquarium. What makes it different is usually you use some kind of soil on the bottom and a layer of sand or rock above that. The soil helps the plants grow and the sand or rock keeps the soil down. The goal of a walstad tank is to have enough soil and plants that the ammonia from fish or in our case axolotls is quickly broken down to nitrates which the plants suck up as nutrients.

The cool thing about the walstad set up is if you get enough plants you only have to do water changes once a month or less.

I'm so excited about it. It looks great. I've always been more of a natural look person, and this looks like a pond. I love it. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Congrats Emmy... I'm looking forward to pics... I want live plants too, didnt realize there was this whole science behind it! Now I have to look up "walstad"
