Hello, this is my first post.

A few days ago my boyfriend gave me an axolotl as a surprise present, I have always been interested in reptiles and amphibians and having an axolotl had been a dream of mine so I was very happy but now I'm trying to find how to care for him as fast as possible.

He is a juvenile wild type (I guess) axolotl about 9cm (3.5 inches) and I have set him up on a 18-22 litre tank with tap water treated with Reptisafe and a live plant (I don't know the name) and no gravel or anything at the bottom of the tank. I also made some cave and decorations with polymer clay, which I read it was safe..

I don't have a thermometer yet but I reckon the temperature in the tank must be below 20C in a room without heating in Ireland.
I also haven't been able to get the tests for the water but I'm hoping it's not too bad because Churro (the little guy) seems ok as in his guills are relaxed etc.

So I have many questions but the most pressing ones are:

1-How do you clear the left over blood worms in the tank? is there any device to suck them out? if so what is it called? Would it be ok to take him out to small tank for feeding time or would this be too stressful?

2- Reptisafe and all those water treatment drops are dechlorinators but I'm almost sure in Ireland what they add to the water is fluoride so, should I also "age" the water before adding it to the tank?

Is there something else I should be doing?

Thanks.

I use a turkey baster to suck up old food or poop. And I honestly haven't heard anything about fluoride and axolotls
