Finally got my axolotl tank set up and want to make sure this is correct.
I have two caves, three plants (I'd like one more plant to fill the empty area in the back), and my newer filter since I read to use the kind where the water spills over. Is the filter fine? I keep thinking it might be to strong but maybe I'm just being a protective new mother. Also, no sand until my axolotl gets bigger since it's only about 3 inches right now.

I also have a frozen floating soda bottle in there to keep the temperature down. It gets it to about 64-68F. I put fake plants in it to make it look appealing. Also a mini fan on top of the tank to blow cool air.

I've included a photo of my tank and a photo of my baby Saskia to show her off.
Here is some footage of her also because I am so proud. lol.
The light on in one of the videos was the day I first got Saskia since it was a little dark in the room and I wanted to document her to my friends! As you can see the light is off in the other video since I read they don't like it.

Okay so what do ya'll think? Anything I need to add/change? And what is that cute little jump she does in the second video? Freakin adorable!

Nothing jumped out as incorrect. It has a lot going on inside your tank so just watch for uneaten food as a forgotten piece can start to decay behind an ornament.

You live in Houston and it gets pretty hot during the summers there. Have you considered how you will maintain the temperature of your tank when the summer time hits?

Your axolotl is going to grow up with some really cute markings by the way.

Right now the tank is in my bedroom. My bedroom gets the coldest in winter and hottest in summer. So I plan on moving the tank to the living room since that gets coldest in summer and hottest in winter. The living room gets beyond cold!

As for cleaning, I tong feed and any food that gets carried away I pick up or suck out after each feeding. No one likes a dirty tank!

Any tips you can share since you live in Texas also about keeping cold temps in summer?

If there's any way to dim the light, I'd do that. Axolotls are sensitive to light and they can't blink, so no light is generally best.

Mind dropping a link to the amazon listing? How much was it? How does it work for you?

Max Chill Aquarium Chiller is Amaaaaaaazing!

Here is a picture of it. I have it inline with an Eheim filter on a 20 gallon. It's big enough so I can get a bigger tank without needing another chiller later.

I'm a total noob with chillers. They connect through the water filter? Special filters? I'm at a loss. Price for the size is nice.

You can run them on their own pump or if you get a canister filter with enough flow. I attach mine to the output of my canister filter, then the output of my chiller goes to the spraybar in the aquarium.

Hi! Another Houstonian here!

I keep my tank cool with one fan blowing over the surface and double 10 gal filters that help break up the surface. Right now its probably around 65, though in warmer weather it does get up more like 68 or 69. I don't have a lid on it or have any lights on it, and I usually keep the lights off in my room anyway. For summer, I'm going to pick up one or two of those clip on bus fans you used to see in the school buses.

So cute! Only thing I don't think was mentioned was if you have a tank lid?

The terra cotta pot cave has smooth edges that I smoothed out myself a few years ago when I kept fish. I have a tank lid with a mini fan blowing air into the water. The tank lid doesn't completely cover the tank closed. It has an opening in the back and I keep the front lid open for the fan. My temp is 64-68F

I'm from Houston too and I'm getting 2 axolotls this Friday! I'm super excited!

Right now my tank temperature is 69 F with no special cooling equipment. During the hotter months I will probably need something though. I am thinking of putting 2 computer fans on top of the tank and see if that makes it cool enough. We usually keep our house at 74 F during the hot months.

I'm actually getting axolotl eggs, so I hope they do well and hatch!
