I've got a firebelly newt in a small 5 gallonish tank and am wondering if he would be ok to put in my 20 gallon long tank which has crystal red/black shrimp in it. would he actually be able to catch them and eat them? I feel like he has enough trouble finding worms, let alone catch some fairly active shrimp but I wasn't sure.
Thoughts?
thanks.

It wouldn´t be a problem provided that you adequate temperatures to the newt´s requirements. I´m not entirely sure crystal reds tolerate those temps like other shrimps (like N.heteropoda). If they do, then i don´t see a problem. The shrimp are no threat to the newt and the newt will certainly not be able to catch any of them easily, perhaps only the weak or old (which is actually rather good, population wise).

A 5 gallon is way too small. The minimum recommended even for a single C.orientalis is a fully aquatic 10 gallon. If you can´t put the newt with the shrimp because of incompatibilities, then you´ll need to upgrade the newt´s tank to a 10 g.

hey thanks for the response. Does anyone else have any experience with newts and dwarf shrimp? I'd love to get some more opinions.

Azhael, first you say 2 fbns can fit in a 10 gallon, but now 1?

The bare minimum is the same for either 1 or 2 newts Zac. In fact, if well stablished and managed, 3 can fit with no problems.
10gallons is the minimum volume that allows easy maintenance and stable conditions. Anything smaller is a nightmare to maintain, and will cause trouble (plus the newts won´t thrive). If you don´t believe me you just have to read or gain experience... both will lead you to the same conclusion.
