Having taken advice from people on the forum, I've improved my firebellied toad's accommodation by adding a divider to make a 50/50 land/water setup.

The toads seem much happier though I've got a few questions.

Here is a view of the land area.

I've put pebbles on the base to allow any water that reaches this area to sink down to the bottom of the tank. Above that is bark covered by moss. Firstly do I need so much moss? Secondly, is there any way I can stop the crickets a) hiding and b) drowning?

This is the water section.

Should I put gravel in here? I was thinking it could anchor the plant which is currently wedged in by the rocks. I was worried that any gravel might collect dirt. I recently watched a batch of axolotl larvae die because of rubbish trapped in gravel and I don't want to go down that road again.

Other thank pothos, are there any other plants I could use in the land side?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

looks real nice ...i keep my frogs in about 3 inch deep water on the water side but my tanks got a smaller land side.i have a ton of fake plants in the water side but i still get drowned crickets.i think you could use less moss if you want...mine have been in less for over a year and a half.a nice easy to grow live plant i got with mine is called fiddle leaf ivy ...i think thats what the plants called.

A beauty! I'm sure your toads are happy lil' guys!

Looks cool.
I use coir and a thinner layer of moss, just enough to cover the surface cos it seems to make those hiding crix easier for the toads to spot.
In my water I have large smooth gravel and have kind of scattered it so it gives the impression of covering the bottom but its easy to shove it about and syphon off the dirt and stuff when I do a water change.

I recently planted a pot of birds nest fern in with mine and they love climbing onto the broad leaves.

They must be happy as there has been much night-time activity in their new quarters and we are now waiting for the resulting spawn to hatch!

I can't believe it's 8 months since they spawned. We now have just over 20 toadlets getting bigger and redder-bellied. I'm hoping I'll be able to sell them in around 4 month's time, when they are around a year old.

I'm now using eco-earth on the land side and have siliconed pebbles on to the glass to help the toads leave the water. I've not progressed with plants, other than common pond weed in the water. I really ought to find some plants for the land side.
