Hi,

i no a question similar may have been asked before but i cannot find anything so please bear with me,

I recently purchased a fire salmander.
temperature stays around 13-20 C .
and i keep the substrate damp, but not soggy.

the salmander sits inside one of its hides, it does not move (even at night) and has not ate for a week or so, doesent seem to drink water or go in its water bowl. occasionally he moves his head. is there something wrong with it as getting slightly worried?
could it need another one in the tank with it?

Any help would be great!!!.

Greg.

When I am concerned about the eating habits of any of my caudates, I tend to place it in a smaller, covered container with barely damp paper. Leave the salamander in there with a number of worms..count them :D Leave them alone for a few hours in the dark. Hopefully when you co me back , you'll find a a chubby little salamander and some missing worms.
Could you perhaps post a picture of your set up and your new addition?

As Julia says, a picture would help.
S.salamandra is basically crepuscular and nocturnal so they move very little if at all during the day. Air humidity also plays a role as they venture out to hunt mostly when it is humid.
Since the animal is a recent acquisition i wouldn´t worry too much, some stress is normal. The origin of the animal will also be key as WC animals is likely to adapt badly and develop problems, whereas a CB animal should become used to its new environment after a small initial shock.
You can entice it to eat by offering earthworms and waxworms, they usually find them irresistible.
