Hello guys, today I was at my local farm store looking at the bulletin board. I saw an ad for baby fire salamanders, but all it said is "eating worms and crickets, ready to go to a good home." And then a picture and telephone number. It did not list a price or if they were free, or the hatch date. should I get one? I have always liked them, and I do want one, but should I get it from this person? Like I said, the paper did not offer much information. Is this bad? should I call them and ask for more information? In the picture they looked healthy. Am I just overly paranoid?
Thanks, ~Saphira

If you have to ask others whether you 'should' get them, the answer is no. You should not.

I happen to know of quite a few people that breed fire salamanders in Washington. But if you do have to ask whether you should get them, and what questions to ask to make sure they're healthy, then you're not ready to get one yourself. They're most likely not free, and in WA they usually sell for up to $50 each.

Do your research on them, and next time you see an ad you'll be able to call and ask the appropriate questions. At the reptile store I work at someone came in and asked all about how to make sure a BTS (from Craigslist) is healthy. The answer was: If you can't tell the warning signs easily yourself (and we can't tell you down to a BMI how fat they should be), then you're probably not ready to get one and haven't done enough research. If you know how healthy it should be and look in your care, then you should be able to determine for yourself whether this is a safe person to buy from based off of the questions you decide to ask.

Just read some more care articles, look at the user galleries for fire salamanders and setups, and figure out what you'd be able to do to feed it and house it, and then you'll be ready to ask the right questions.

You guys are right. I am new to the newt and salamander world, so I don't know much yet. If I do end up getting one eventually, I will have done more research, set up a terrarium, and so on. oh well, *sigh.* maybe next time, when I'm better informed.

Good call Saphira101....research and educating yourself are requisites before becomming a keeper.

I'm also looking for some fire bellies. It's tricky finding the right ones, but don't rush into anything. When yu find the right ones you'll know :)
