Hi! First-time salamander owner here. I've got a two-year old Salamandra salamandra salamandra and I'm setting up a planted bioactive tank for him. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm planning on using ferns (not sure which ones yet), ivies (not sure which ones yet either) and plants like ficus pumila. I want to use moss as well, but I'm not sure exactly what types to get. Pillow moss? Sheet moss? Christmas moss? Any suggestions would be appreciated :).

Also, what humidity range does everyone keep their fire sals at?

Well you could definitely use moss!
Try looking into Pilea plants they stay small!!
They will also add alot of color!
Also look into Fittonia and air plants!!!
F. pumila would work!
For ferns try elkhorns or maidenhair.
For Ivy try the English Ivy var. ‘Tiny Needlepoint’!
If you need help finding locations with these contact me.

Thank you so much! I hadn't ever considered pilea, and I just now added some air plants to my ocellated gecko enclosure and really love how they look. I've heard that ficus pumila and fittonia are a little tricky, do you have any tips? Also, for moss, do you have any specific recommendations? I might end up doing live sphagnum but not sure what's better. I'll definitely check those out, but if you have any suggestions on where to buy from, I'd love to hear <3 Thanks again!

Sorry for the late reply, I normally keep ficus pumila and fittonia wet because they are tropical. I would recommend specifically ficus pumila ‘Quercifolia’ as it easily grows and is easily propagated. Moss collected from outside would would but I recommend you Quarantine the moss. But don’t use star moss as It requires acidic soil. Sphagnum Moss would work try Meadowview Biological Research Station | Preserving and Restoring Pitcher Plant Bogs to get some for a good price.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
