Hi all

As you may see from my personal page i keep a fair selection of Salamandra sub species, and my ulitmate aim is to be able to keep all available species/sub species, but my question is ....

Realistically are all species/sub species of salamandra available to enthusiasts like me?

What are your thoughts, i realise some may be bred but in small numbers and maybe not available commercially.

Ben

I find they are not that eassily available. The Salamandra salamandra subespecies seem to be available through europe, some more than others of course, but the other Salamandra species are quite rare in my opinion. S.corsica, S.infrainmaculata, etc, are rarely bred as far as i know....most people that keep these species have WC animals(usually they are quite expensive too).
As for S.atra i don´t know of anyone breeding them nor anyone keeping them for that matter.

I´ve personally been trying to acquire S.corsica CB, but no luck yet. Anyway i think most Salamandra species/subespecies are definitely starting to be bred more often, and their availability is bound to encrease.

Hi Rodrigo

You pretty much confirmed what i thought, although i have managed to buy some S i orientalis, i am just hoping we do get confirmation of more species being kept and being bred.

I hope you get your S corsica in time

I am very suspicious of many of the captive bred Salamandra offered for sale in the US. While some are small babies that very well could be captive bred, many are large adults. It seems unlikely that large adults would be kept for the amount of time required to get to maturity in the large numbers that some dealers have for sale. One should use great caution in acquiring some of these rare or endangered species or forms.

Dear Sonic,

if you have got your S. i. orientalis from Dartfrog..they are likely to be S. i semenovi. It seems they have spread animals without the correct name attached.
Many subspecies of S. salamandra are around in Europe, but not particular in great numbers. Several are bred in Germany.
All other species are most of the times protected in the countries of origin and therefor it is difficult to obtain them in a legal way. S. atra, S. lanzai and S. corsica are highly protected. S. corsica seems to be around also in small numbers. Illegal caught S. algira has been imported through Germany for a few years in a row, but strange enough they are not regularly bred although they are not very complicated to keep.

Good luck!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
