Hi everyone :)

I have been researching both fire and marbled salamanders extensively lately because I would like to invest in one of each. From what I have read they both live in nearly identical climates setups, etc. Anyone have any experience with this/reason I should avoid it?

I haven't owned a salamander yet and wanted to ask someplace with knowledgeable people and a few people suggested this resource.

I want to be sure one way or another before I unintentionally make anything uncomfortable with it's surroundings.

Thanks for any help guys!

I noticed that article, however I didn't see anything related to two salamanders. They are pretty much identical in size, but I guess you are probably right. It's probably better to avoid a situation like that..

In the wild different species of animals (or different animals of the same specie) have the oppurtunity to avoid eachother. In an enclosure this isn't an option which increases the stress levels of all the animals. It's not only that they can see eachother, they can also chemically detect eachother. Stress can cause the death of your newts and salamanders, because it affects the immune system and it can be a quick one. This discussion isn't new to this forum of course. If you want more information you can find it in other topics dealing with this matter.

Unless you're planning a large enclosure, I wouldn't do it. If you are looking for inexpensive housing, you are probably looking at 10-20 gallon tanks. Each salamander in its own 10-gallon tank would be fine for them.
