Recently I've discovered my newts have taken a liking to River (freeze-dried) shrimp. Suggested by a friend when my female newt was sick and having trouble eating her usual diet, I ordered a 250ml tub of the stuff and my newt's tend to go for it more than earthworms and bloodworms! Rich in Crude Protein, oils and fat, It's worth a try if you have a fussy little newt like me. You can order it off amazon and I highly recommend it
Methods I've used when trying to get them enticed is by gently moving it about in the water with some tweezers or in front of them. The shrimp is quite small so its easy to chomp up for young newts and softens in the water. I also have a floating log that they recognise as a feeding hole and visit regularly.
