Hi newt people!

My Chinese fire belly newts produced a little baby newt mid June ish so it's almost 2 months old and it's already started coming out of the water and stuff. I thought that once a larvae comes out of the water it needs to be moved to its new land terrarium thing (which I already have set up btw) so I went to move him and he dove back into the water. So anyway, I guess my question is how do I know when he actually needs to be moved? He's been breathing air on land but he also still has some little gills left.

Thanks!

I've moved mine when they've climbed up on a cork and stayed there. Their shape is at that moment different, they look like miniature adults and not babies anymore. There might be just tiny nubs where the gills used to be. With our babies, it has taken 3-5 months (my orientalis are in a cooler room and they morph later than pyrrhos that are in a warmer room). Good luck with the little fellow :)
