Yesterday morning I found my juvenile fire belly upside down in the water. It was still alive but very VERY lethargic. Pulled him out of the water and put him on a rock for easy breathing. Now, about 36 hours later he still hasn’t moved from the rock and is really struggling. Only sign of life if that he moves his tail a bit if I nudge him with tongs. Not holding his head up or anything.
His water is clean, he was eating well. The night before he went off he was fine, active and swimming. The only thing I can think of is some sort of toxin. The neighbors below us started burning insence. Could that be the cause? I’ve closed the window to prevent more getting in.
im keeping his water cool (about 60-64 degrees) and have a blanket wrapped around the tank to keep it quiet and dark but I don’t know if there’s much else I can do.

Any help would be appreciated

Still holding on. He’s become a bit bloated today. A little bit of tail movement is still the only sign of life I’ve seen from him.

Update: he has developed the texture and look of the shine. Not sure if that’s what was responsible for this whole thing or if it’s secondary. I’ve got him on damp paper towels (still on the rock I put him on when I first took him out of the water) in a cooler bag as my fridge gets too cold.
Does anyone have ideas to get some nutrition into him? He is far to small to force feed without causing injury

I would try repashy grub pie, it’s the most appetizing to them. You can also try nightcrawlers

I’ll see if I can get my hands on some repashy, but my concern is that he won’t be able to eat it. The only movement I’ve seen out of him is his tail and he’s not holding his head up. I’m honestly surprised he’s still hanging on.

Poor little guy☹️ What are your water parameters? I’m sorry I don’t know a whole lot about newts, I will try my best to help though.

everything’s at 0, ph is just above 7. It’s a small unicycles tank with about an inch of water in it as he’s still very small, less than 2 inches. The water gets changed every day. I’ve got him in a cooler bag now so I can keep him a bit colder on damp paper towel.

Unfortunately Vulkan died yesterday. I didn’t have a lot of hope given that he couldn’t lift his head but I still wish I couldn’t have done more.

I’m sorry💔 it was likely something genetic and you did everything you could. Don’t let this discourage you, you were an amazing keeper and there was nothing you could do. I’m so sorry💔💔💔
