The newt usually arcs and the tail points forward and runs parallel to the newts body. The tail does a shake in a wave fashion at a very fast speed.
Here is a example video of a L. vulgaris (Smooth newt) tail fanning. Fanning is pretty universal for newts as far looks are concerned. My C. cyanurus tail fanning looks just like this.
