Filtration on tank question

I recently rescued two axolotls from a home and it is firat time having axolotls. i was wondering when doing water changes if it was ok to have the filtration out of water for the changing or if it needs to be lowered with water to keep good bacteria alive?

As long as the filter media is still wet/moist, the good bacteria won't die. I do weekly water changes for a 55g that leave the filter media above water for a good 30 mins, and parameters on that tank are great!
